LUCID Registration for Germany (Online Sellers)

2026-06-24 · 8 min read

Germany's Verpackungsgesetz (VerpackG) requires every producer placing packaged goods on the German market to register with the LUCID packaging register (operated by ZSVR) before first sale. For Shopify and ecommerce sellers, this is the single most common compliance gap — and Germany enforces it aggressively with fines up to €200,000.

The no-threshold rule

Unlike Spain's 50-tonne threshold or the UK's turnover tests, Germany applies no minimum quantity. One Amazon FBA unit or one Shopify order shipped to Munich triggers full producer obligations: LUCID registration, system participation fee (via a scheme like Der Grüne Punkt, Interseroh, or BellandVision), and annual data reporting.

LUCID XML format

LUCID accepts machine-readable XML conforming to the ZSVR XSD schema. The file lists your Registrierungsnummer, reporting period, and quantities in kilograms per material code (10000=glass, 40000=paper/cardboard, 50000=plastic, etc.). Manual XML authoring is impractical; EPR Auto-Tracker generates valid LUCID XML from your Shopify order aggregation.

Step-by-step for Shopify sellers

  1. Register your company at lucid.verpackungsregister.org and obtain your LUCID number.
  2. Sign a system participation agreement with a German compliance scheme.
  3. Install EPR Auto-Tracker and map each variant's packaging material and weight.
  4. Generate LUCID XML for Germany + your reporting year.
  5. Upload XML to LUCID and retain the audit trail.

I'm dropshipping from China to German customers. Am I liable?

Generally the entity placing packaging on the German market is liable. Dropshipping structures vary — if your brand appears on the package or you are the seller of record, you likely need LUCID registration. Consult a German packaging lawyer for complex supply chains.

Can I use the same LUCID number on Amazon and Shopify?

Yes. LUCID registration is per legal entity, not per sales channel. One Registrierungsnummer covers all your German sales.

What if I already sell to Germany without LUCID?

Register immediately and file retroactive reports if required. Continued non-compliance risks fines and marketplace account suspension when Amazon or eBay verify registration numbers.
