Classify multi-layer packaging by recording every physical layer separately — primary film, secondary carton, protective insert — with its own material category and weight in grams. EPR registries expect kilograms by material code, not a single “mixed packaging” guess. On Shopify, map those layers once per product variant; order aggregation then multiplies each layer by units sold for the reporting country and period.

What is multi-layer packaging in EPR terms?

Multi-layer packaging means more than one material component travels with the product to the consumer: for example a plastic pouch inside a cardboard mailer, or a glass jar with a steel lid and paper label sleeve. Each component is usually reported under its own registry material code (plastic, paper/cardboard, glass, steel, aluminium, composites, beverage carton, wood, other). Treating the whole shipment as one material understates some codes and overstates others — a common reason LUCID or DEFRA files fail review.

How does multi-layer mapping work on Shopify?

  1. Open Packaging Setup in EPR Auto-Tracker and select a product variant.
  2. Add one row per physical layer (material + weight in grams).
  3. Use subtypes where the destination report requires them (e.g. UK plastic Rigid/Flexible).
  4. Save once; later orders reuse the same mapping for auto-aggregation.
  5. Generate the country report — totals sum layer weights × units shipped to that market.

Do I map shipping cartons if the carrier supplies them?

Map the packaging you place on the market with the product. Carrier-owned transit packaging is often treated differently — record what your brand controls (product packaging and any mailer you add).

What if two layers are the same material?

You can still add two plastic layers with different weights, or combine them into one plastic row if weights are known in total. Totals must equal the real grams of that material per unit sold.
