UK household packaging in classes P1, P2, P3, and B1 must carry a RAG recyclability assessment: R (recyclable), A (almost recyclable), or G (not recyclable). The rating comes from the Recyclability Assessment Methodology used in UK packaging EPR reporting. Without a RAG value on those rows, a Report Packaging Data file is incomplete for household obligations.
RAG is a three-letter recyclability scale used in UK packaging data returns. R means the packaging is assessed as recyclable under the methodology, A means almost recyclable (design or material barriers remain), and G means not recyclable. It is separate from material codes (PL, PC, GL, etc.) and from plastic Rigid/Flexible subtypes — you typically need material, subtype (for plastic), and RAG together on household rows.
| Packaging type | Packaging class | RAG required? |
|---|---|---|
| HH (household) | P1, P2, P3, B1 | Yes |
| HH (household) | Other classes | Follow current DEFRA/RPD guidance |
| Non-HH types | — | RAG rules differ; check your obligation profile |
In Packaging Setup and report generation, the app stores a UK RAG option (R / A / G) where household class rules require it. If two internal materials roll up into one UK material code with different RAG values, the exporter keeps the more conservative (least recyclable) rating so the file does not overstate recyclability.
Who decides if my pack is R, A, or G?
You (or your compliance advisor) assess against the UK Recyclability Assessment Methodology and scheme guidance. The app stores and exports the rating you assign; it does not replace a legal recyclability opinion.
Is RAG the same as a recycling logo on the pack?
No. On-pack consumer labels and UK EPR RAG reporting are related ideas but different obligations. Report the RAG that matches your assessed packaging design for the RPD file.
Do I need RAG for Germany LUCID XML?
No. RAG is a UK reporting field. LUCID XML uses ZSVR material codes and masses; map layers for Germany separately from UK RAG.
